Portrait Statement

Throw out any idea you might have of seeing traditional portraits on canvas from artist Brian Joiner. He creates three-dimensional constructed images that mirror the sitter's successes and failures, triumphs and tragedies, hopes and vulnerabilities of life's experiences. These portraits reveal the best of who you are without the perfume of falsified glamour.

Joiner prefers that you see the portrait after its completion and not before. This surprise element is very important to the initial impact. Because of this risk factor, the format allows for both mystery and revelation. Therefore, the clients' responses will be very unpredictable.

Joiner aptly coins his signature style as "Joinerism," a progressive 21st century style of 3-dimensional portraiture aimed at serious art buying audiences.

Brian Joiner's portraits are what he is known for and he has been the recipient of many awards based on this body of work.

Floral Series

The Floral Series is an ongoing investigation that uses the flower image to engage our sensibilities about disenchantment and hope, vulnerability and stability, life and death, war and peace.

The florals are metaphors about the fragile nature of relationships and the struggle to maintain balance and stability, whether it's between lovers, friends, family, governments, countries and cultures. The work represents the elusiveness of attaining and maintaining peace among a world of false promises and insecurity. Life becomes a game where the rules are forever changing; creating uncertainty for a society that is on the brink of falling apart.

The florals in my work remain the cliché of the cycle of birth, growth and death, passing one's seed to future generations. As my life unfolds, the world as I know it begins to collapse in my face...my loss of innocence.

The drama of daily experience and current events has affected the registration of my floral representations, yet my work is not about conclusions; it is a journey that invites speculation, hoping for a happy ending. This journey is just beginning.
